This second hand multi-Effects Processor is in great condition
The Vox ToneLab ST is a compact, pedalboard-style multi-effects processor that brings authentic tube-driven amp modeling into a portable unit. Unlike most digital processors, the ToneLab ST incorporates a real 12AX7 vacuum tube, adding warmth and dynamics to its amp simulations. It’s designed for gigging guitarists, home players, and studio musicians who want a versatile, easy-to-use effects unit with classic Vox tone shaping.
Build Quality & Design
The ToneLab ST has a sturdy metal chassis, making it durable for both studio and stage use. Its compact size and intuitive layout are a major plus—everything is easily accessible, with a large rotary knob for preset selection, dedicated buttons for effects, and an expression pedal that can be used for wah, volume, or effect control.
The LCD screen is basic but functional, displaying patch names and key settings. The stompbox-style footswitches make it easy to toggle presets during performances. Overall, it’s well-built and road-ready.
Tone & Effects
The standout feature of the ToneLab ST is its Valvetronix technology, which combines digital modeling with a real 12AX7 tube to deliver organic, amp-like tones. The unit offers:
- 33 amp models, including Vox classics like the AC30, as well as Fender, Marshall, and Mesa Boogie-inspired tones.
- 11 speaker cabinet simulations, allowing for different mic’d cab tones.
- 50 effects, including overdrives, distortions, modulations, delays, reverbs, and wah.
- 100 preset slots, with 50 factory and 50 user-customizable patches.
The amp models feel more natural than purely digital processors, thanks to the tube circuit, which adds warmth, compression, and harmonic richness. The clean and crunch tones are excellent, especially the Vox and Fender-inspired models. High-gain tones are decent but can sound a bit compressed or digital compared to modern multi-effects units.
The effects are solid, but not as deep or tweakable as dedicated pedals. The delays and reverbs sound great, while the modulation effects (chorus, flanger, phaser) offer good variety but lack extreme customization.
Playability & Usability
The ToneLab ST is easy to use, with straightforward navigation and minimal menu-diving. The "AMP/LINE" switch allows for direct recording or connection to an amp, optimizing the sound for each setup.
The built-in expression pedal is a great feature, especially for wah and volume control. However, some players might find the patch switching slightly slow, which could be a drawback for live performance.
Connectivity & Recording Features
The Vox ToneLab ST is designed for both live and studio use, offering:
- Stereo 1/4" outputs for amp or PA connections.
- USB interface for direct recording into a DAW.
- Headphone output for silent practice.
- AUX input for jamming along with backing tracks.
While the USB connectivity is convenient, it lacks full-fledged audio interface functionality—so for serious recording, you may still need a separate interface.
Pros & Cons
Pros:
- Real 12AX7 tube for authentic amp response
- Great clean and mid-gain amp models
- Simple and intuitive control layout
- Built-in expression pedal
- USB connectivity for recording
- Durable metal chassis
Cons:
- High-gain tones can sound a bit digital
- Effects lack deep editing options
- Patch switching is slightly slow
- USB lacks full audio interface functionality
The Vox ToneLab ST is a fantastic multi-effects unit for players who want authentic amp tones with real tube warmth. It’s ideal for classic rock, blues, and clean-to-crunch players, though metal players might find the high-gain tones a bit lacking.
While it’s not the most advanced unit compared to modern digital processors like the Boss GT-1000 or Line 6 HX Stomp, its tube-driven tone, ease of use, and compact design make it a solid choice for gigging guitarists and home players alike.
If you love Vox tones and tube warmth in a small, affordable package, the ToneLab ST is a great option.
