Epiphone Les Paul Junior – Review
The Epiphone Les Paul Junior is a stripped-down, no-frills rock machine that stays true to its roots as a student model turned punk and rock icon. Inspired by the original 1950s Gibson Les Paul Junior, this modern Epiphone version offers classic tone and attitude at a highly accessible price point.
Build & Design
The Les Paul Junior sports a single-cutaway slab mahogany body and a bolt-on or set mahogany neck depending on the model/year. It’s minimalist in the best way, with a single dog-ear P-90 pickup, wraparound bridge, and simple volume/tone controls. The finish options often include Vintage Tobacco Burst or Ebony, both of which evoke vintage vibes.
-
Neck: 60s SlimTaper profile – fast, comfortable, and perfect for chord work or gritty solos.
-
Fingerboard: Indian laurel or rosewood, 12" radius, 22 medium jumbo frets – great for expressive bends.
-
Construction: Solid and surprisingly resonant, with good tuning stability and quality fit and finish for the price.
Tone
The Les Paul Junior’s single P-90 is the star of the show. It delivers a bold, raw, and mid-heavy sound with excellent articulation.
-
Clean Tones: Warm and bluesy with bite – great for old-school R&B or jazzy cleans.
-
Overdrive: Where it shines. Crunchy, raunchy, and full of attitude. Ideal for punk, garage rock, and classic rock.
-
Roll Back the Volume: Cleans up nicely, offering surprising tonal versatility from just one pickup.
Playability
Thanks to its simple design, lightweight body, and ergonomic feel, it’s incredibly playable. The Junior encourages aggressive strumming and expressive playing. Its wraparound bridge helps keep things simple and resonant, though it may limit intonation precision for picky players.
Pros:
-
Iconic P-90 tone with raw edge and warmth
-
Lightweight and comfortable
-
Great bang for the buck
-
Stripped-back charm – one volume, one tone, one job: rock
-
Ideal for modding and upgrades
Cons:
-
Limited tonal range compared to dual-pickup guitars
-
Basic hardware – may require setup tweaks
-
Wraparound bridge may hinder perfect intonation
-
No neck pickup for those who prefer smooth jazzy tones
Verdict
The Epiphone Les Paul Junior is a rock 'n' roll workhorse. With its raw P-90 punch, vintage looks, and straightforward playability, it captures the rebellious spirit of early rock and punk music. Whether you’re a beginner looking for simplicity or a seasoned player wanting a no-nonsense tone machine, the Les Paul Junior delivers more than expected at its price point.
Rating: 8.5/10
Classic tone, minimal fuss, and maximum attitude.
