Description

This second hand microphone is in very good condition.

A bit of a dent on the top , but all works fine

The Shure PE5EQ is a 1970s-era, dual‑impedance, unidirectional dynamic microphone designed specifically for vocalists. Though long discontinued, it remains an interesting collectible and a surprisingly usable mic if you appreciate vintage Shure tone and its unique built‑in EQ switching.

 Background & Design

  • Era: Late 1970s
  • Type: Dynamic, cardioid/unidirectional
  • Impedance: Dual (Hi‑Z / Lo‑Z)
  • Origin: Made in the USA
  • Purpose: Vocal performance with onboard tonal shaping

The PE series was Shure’s “Performance Enhanced” line, aimed at working singers who wanted more control over their sound without external EQ.

The Unique Feature: 16 EQ Variations

One of the standout features of the PE5EQ is its built‑in equalizer switch system, offering up to 16 tonal variations. This was designed to help vocalists tailor their sound and reduce feedback on stage.

These EQ settings don’t behave like modern digital presets—they’re more like analog voicings that subtly shift presence, warmth, and midrange contour. Some settings sound excellent; others are more niche or situational.

 Sound Quality

The PE5EQ has a classic Shure 1970s vocal sound, early SM57/SM58 lineage but with a slightly different midrange character.

What it sounds like:

  • Warm, rounded low‑mids
  • Moderate presence boost (varies with EQ setting)
  • Good feedback rejection thanks to the cardioid pattern
  • Slightly vintage coloration compared to modern Shure mics

Depending on the EQ switch position, it can sound surprisingly modern or distinctly retro

Build Quality

As expected from 1970s Shure gear:

  • Solid metal construction
  • Durable capsule
  • Long lifespan (many still work perfectly today)d

 Use Cases

Even today, the PE5EQ works well for:

  • Vintage‑style vocal recording
  • Harmonica / blues harp
  • Spoken word
  • Collectors of Shure microphones
  • Musicians wanting a unique tonal palette

 Pros

  • Unique 16‑position EQ system
  • Warm, vintage Shure tone
  • Solid 1970s build quality
  • Dual impedance flexibility
  • Collectible and uncommon

 Cons

  • Discontinued—no new units or factory support
  • EQ switches can be noisy or worn on older units
  • Not as clean or consistent as modern Shure mics
  • Sound varies significantly between settings

The Shure PE5EQ is a quirky, charming, and surprisingly capable vintage microphone. It’s not a replacement for a modern SM58 or Beta series mic, but if you enjoy vintage gear or want a mic with multiple analog voicings, t’s a fascinating piece of Shure history.
