This second hand pedal is in very good condition
The Boss RC-20XL Loop Station is one of the pedals that helped bring live looping into the mainstream. Although it has since been superseded by newer Loop Station models, the RC-20XL remains a favourite among guitarists, singers, bassists and solo performers thanks to its intuitive operation, rock-solid reliability and practical feature set. Whether you're building layered performances, writing songs or simply practising your improvisation, the RC-20XL is still a highly capable looper.
The pedal's standout feature is its generous 16 minutes of recording time, which was a major leap forward when it was introduced. It also allows you to save up to 11 loop phrases, making it easy to prepare backing tracks or rhythm parts for live performances. An Undo function lets you remove the last overdub without losing the entire loop, while Auto Quantize helps create tighter loops by correcting minor timing errors. The RC-20XL can also change loop tempo without affecting pitch, making it a useful practice tool.
Operation is refreshingly straightforward. The large twin-pedal layout separates recording, playback and overdubbing from stop functions, making it much easier to use live than many compact single-switch loopers. Optional external footswitches can be added for hands-free phrase selection, giving performers even greater flexibility on stage.
Sound quality is excellent, preserving the natural tone of your instrument while handling multiple overdubs with very little degradation. The RC-20XL accepts instrument, microphone and auxiliary inputs, making it suitable for acoustic performers and vocalists as well as electric guitarists. Its rugged metal construction is typical Boss quality, built to withstand years of rehearsals, gigs and studio use.
As a practice tool, the RC-20XL is hard to fault. Recording chord progressions and soloing over them is effortless, while songwriters can quickly capture ideas before they disappear. Solo performers can create impressive layered arrangements by stacking rhythm, harmony and lead parts in real time, effectively becoming a one-person band.
The pedal does show its age in a few areas. It offers only a single stereo loop at a time rather than multiple independent tracks found on modern loopers. Its physical footprint is also larger than today's compact designs, and the user interface lacks the visual displays and advanced editing features available on newer models. However, many players still appreciate its simple workflow, which encourages making music rather than navigating menus.
Pros
- Excellent sound quality with transparent looping
- 16 minutes of recording time
- Stores up to 11 loop phrases
- Undo function makes overdubbing forgiving
- Auto Quantize improves loop timing
- Simple, performance-friendly twin-pedal design
- Legendary Boss reliability and build quality
The Boss RC-20XL remains one of the classic looping pedals for good reason. Its combination of straightforward operation, dependable performance and excellent sound quality has ensured it remains relevant long after production ended. While newer loopers offer more tracks and advanced features, the RC-20XL delivers everything many musicians need in a reliable and easy-to-use package. For players looking for a robust looper that excels at practice, songwriting and live performance, it is still an outstanding choice on the used market.
