Description

This second hand guitar pedal is in great condition

The Electro‑Harmonix Metal Muff is a high‑gain distortion pedal built for players who want aggressive, cutting metal tones with a surprising amount of EQ control.

 What It Sounds Like

The Metal Muff is unapologetically big, saturated, and modern. At its core, it delivers:

  • Thick, compressed distortion with loads of sustain
  • Fast attack that keeps palm‑mutes tight rather than flubby
  • A wide gain range, though realistically it lives in the “high‑gain only” world
  • A bright, cutting top end, especially when the Top Boost is engaged

Controls & Real‑World Use

The Metal Muff’s strength is its three‑band EQ, which is far more flexible than most metal pedals.

  • Bass — Adds weight without mud if used carefully
  • Mid — The most important knob; scooping gives classic thrash, boosting gives modern punch
  • Treble — Controls the bite and sizzle
  • Top Boost (footswitchable) — A separate high‑frequency lift that can cut through a dense band mix

 How It Feels to Play

The pedal has a tight, controlled feel, almost like a built‑in noise gate (though it doesn’t have one). It responds well to:

  • Fast alternate‑picking
  • Chugging riffs
  • Drop tunings
  • Active pickups
  • Solid‑state or clean‑platform amps

 In a Band Mix

This is where the Metal Muff shines. The EQ and Top Boost make it easy to carve out a space in a loud mix. It avoids the “blanket over the amp” problem some metal pedals suffer from.

  • Rhythm guitars: tight, articulate, and mix‑friendly
  • Leads: cut through with ease
  • Layered tracks: stack well without turning to mush

 Strengths

  • Huge gain with clarity
  • Excellent EQ flexibility
  • Tight low end for modern metal
  • Footswitchable Top Boost for solos
  • Works well with both humbuckers and actives

Who It’s For

The Metal Muff is ideal for players who want:

  • Modern metal tones without needing a high‑gain amp
  • A distortion that stays tight in drop tunings
  • A pedal that cuts through a dense mix
  • A budget‑friendly but powerful metal solution

The Electro‑Harmonix Metal Muff is a high‑gain workhorse with more tonal shaping than most metal pedals in its price range. It’s not subtle, but it’s reliable, aggressive, and capable of genuinely impressive tones when dialled in.
