This second hand guitar amp is in great condition

Fender Blues Junior  – Classic 15-Watt Combo Amp

The Fender Blues Junior,, quickly became a staple for blues, rock, and indie players seeking warm tube tone in a compact, gig-friendly combo. As the first iteration of what would become one of Fender’s most successful small amps, the original Blues Junior offers a stripped-down, no-nonsense approach to valve amplification with signature Fender character.

  • Output: 15 watts

  • Tubes: 3x 12AX7 preamp tubes, 2x EL84 power tubes

  • Speaker: 12" Fender Special Design

  • Channels: Single channel with footswitchable FAT boost

  • Controls: Volume, Treble, Bass, Middle, Master, Reverb

  • Reverb: Genuine spring reverb

  • Made in: USA (initial runs)

Tone & Character

The 1991 Blues Junior delivers the classic Fender mid-powered combo sound—bright, responsive, and dynamic. The EL84 power section gives it a slightly more British bite compared to Fender’s 6V6 or 6L6-based amps, while still retaining plenty of clean headroom for pedals or studio use.

With the FAT switch engaged (boosted via a footswitch or front panel), the amp adds midrange gain for solos or overdriven tones, which is particularly helpful given its single-channel layout. Despite its simplicity, it’s remarkably expressive:

  • Clean tones are sparkly and articulate

  • Crunch tones are rich and bluesy with touch-sensitive breakup

  • High gain is limited, but pedals push it beautifully

Reverb

The onboard spring reverb is lush and musical, adding a vintage shimmer without sounding washy or artificial. It’s one of the standout features, especially for players who rely on natural ambience rather than digital effects.

Build Quality & Portability

Early Blues Juniors were built in the USA with a solid MDF cabinet, robust black Tolex, and Fender’s no-frills layout. At around 31 lbs (14 kg), it’s easily portable and fits in small venues, studios, or practice rooms. The 12” Fender/Eminence speaker in the original model has a slightly darker, more mid-heavy voice than later Creamback or Jensen-equipped reissues.

Pros

  • Authentic Fender tube tone in a small package

  • Great with pedals (OD, delay, reverb, modulation)

  • Excellent spring reverb

  • Simple, intuitive controls

  • FAT switch adds useful gain boost

  • USA-made version

Best For

  • Blues, rock, indie, jazz, and roots players

  • Guitarists wanting authentic tube tone at manageable volume

  • Players looking for a pedal platform amp

  • Studio musicians and small venue performers

  • Fender amp collectors (especially for original 1991 units)

The Fender Blues Junior remains a beloved and highly usable tube combo that hits the sweet spot between tone, size, and affordability. While newer iterations have improved in reliability and flexibility, the original has its own distinctive mojo, thanks to its slightly rawer tone, American-made heritage, and simplified charm.
