Description

This second hand electric guitar is in very good condition.

A few very light marks on the body, a scuff on the headstock ,and a mark on the finish on the back of the neck, and a nick on the fretboard

The 2002 Fender Classic Series ‘72 Telecaster Custom (Made in Mexico) is one of the most characterful and best‑built MIM models of its era. With its Wide Range–style humbucker, classic Tele bridge pickup, and unmistakable dual‑control layout, it delivers that gritty, open, 70s rock tone with far better build consistency than many early‑2000s Fenders. It’s not a perfect recreation of the original WRHB, but it is a superb, gig‑ready hybrid Tele with a unique voice.

This model sits in a sweet spot: vintage vibe, modern reliability, and a tonal palette that covers everything from rhythm to indie jangle to thick, smoky leads. The 2002 examples built in Ensenada during a strong production period are known for:

  • Excellent neck finishing

  • Stable hardware

  • Consistent fretwork

  • A punchy, mid‑rich voice

Build Quality & Construction

Body

  • Alder body

  • Full‑thickness, classic Tele shape

  • Gloss polyester finish (durable, very 2000s Fender)

  • Weight typically 8–9 lbs

The body resonates well and balances nicely, even with the larger 70s pickguard and extra electronics.

Neck

  • Maple neck with a U‑shaped 70s profile

  • 7.25" radius

  • Vintage frets

  • Bullet truss rod + 70s headstock aesthetic

The neck is chunky but comfortable, more substantial than a modern C, but not a baseball bat. Early‑2000s MIM necks are famously stable, and this one is no exception.

Electronics & Tone

Wide Range–Style Humbucker (Neck)

This is not the 70s accurate CuNiFe WRHB design. It’s a standard humbucker in a WRHB‑sized housing with ceramic magnets.

Tone Character

  • Thick, warm, and mid‑forward

  • More clarity than a PAF, less sparkle than a true WRHB

  • Great for chords, rhythm, and smoky blues leads

It’s not a perfect vintage clone, but it has a musical, slightly gritty voice that works beautifully with the Tele bridge pickup.

Telecaster Single‑Coil (Bridge)

  • Classic Tele bite

  • Bright but not ice‑pick

  • Pairs surprisingly well with the humbucker thanks to the dual‑volume/dual‑tone layout

Combined Positions

This is where the guitar shines. The blend of humbucker warmth and Tele twang gives you:

  • Indie/alt‑rock chime

  • Funky, scooped rhythm tones

  • Rich, complex cleans

Hardware

Bridge

  • Vintage 3‑saddle Tele bridge

  • Steel saddles

  • Solid sustain and classic Tele attack

Tuners

  • Fender vintage‑style

  • Smooth, reliable, stable

Controls

  • Les Paul‑style layout:

    • Volume + tone for each pickup

    • 3‑way toggle on the upper bout

This layout gives you far more tonal control than a standard Tele.

 Real‑World Use

Gigging

  • Built like a tank

  • Versatile enough for multiple genres

  • Cuts through a mix without harshness

Recording

  • Neck pickup gives thick, mix‑friendly warmth

  • Bridge pickup delivers classic Tele articulation

  • Middle position is excellent for rhythm tracks

 Pros

  • Distinctive 70s Tele tone and styling

  • Excellent MIM build quality from this era

  • Versatile dual‑pickup layout

  • Great neck feel and stability

  • Perfect modding platform

  • Holds value well

The 2002 Fender Classic Series ‘72 Telecaster Custom is a standout MIM model: reliable, characterful, and capable of tones you simply can’t get from a standard Tele. The stock WRHB isn’t historically accurate, but the guitar as a whole is musical, expressive, and full of personality

If you want a Tele that does rock, indie, blues, and 70s grit with equal confidence, this model is absolutely worth owning.
