Description
This second hand banjo is in very good condition.
Some cosmetic tarnishing to the skin.
The Grafton Clipper 4‑String sits in that sweet spot between affordability and serious craftsmanship. Built by Grafton/Andy Perkins (The Banjo Works), it’s designed as a reliable, musical, and well‑set‑up instrument for players who want a proper tenor or plectrum banjo without paying vintage‑American prices. It’s a no‑nonsense banjo that focuses on tone, playability, and build quality rather than flashy decoration , and that’s exactly why it has such a loyal following.
Build Quality & Construction
The Clipper series is known for being solidly built, with attention to detail that punches above its price. Owners consistently praise the craftsmanship, noting clean finishing, tight hardware, and a feel that suggests long‑term durability.
Even the more affordable Clipper models maintain this ethos: simple aesthetics, strong materials, and a focus on structural integrity rather than ornamentation.
Tone & Sound Character
The Clipper line is known for its bright, lively, and projecting tone, ideal for traditional jazz, Dixieland, folk, and Irish tenor styles.
Pros
- Excellent build quality for the price
- Bright, projecting tone ideal for jazz, folk, and traditional styles
- Durable construction with long‑term reliability
- Understated, classic appearance
- Comes with a proper fitted case
Cons
- Aesthetics are plain — no ornate inlays or flashy trim
- Not as “vintage‑authentic” as high‑end American banjos
The Grafton Clipper 4‑String Banjo is one of the best value instruments in its category , especially for UK players. It offers serious tone, excellent playability, and dependable construction without the inflated price tag of imported brands. Whether you’re playing Dixieland, Irish tenor, folk accompaniment, or plectrum jazz, the Clipper delivers a bright, confident voice and a professional feel.
