History & Origins

  • Brand Evolution: Marlin began as a budget mail-order brand in the UK under British Music Strings Ltd., gaining popularity in the mid-1980s. Early production took place in East Germany (GDR). Around 1986, manufacturing shifted to Samick in Korea, and in 1989, the Marlin name was acquired by Hohner, who continued production through Cort.

  • Market Position: Marlin branded guitars and basses were budget-friendly instruments sold widely in the UK via music shops and catalog retailers like Kays and Littlewoods.

  • Construction & Value: Marlin instruments were generally made with cost-effective materials like plywood and entry-level hardware. Their build quality was modest but offered decent playability given their entry-level price

  • Perception & Legacy: Owners often regarded Marlins as "starter" musical instruments.

The 1980s Marlin by Hohner basses are compact, entry-level instruments from a transitional period of guitar manufacturing. They reflect a budget-conscious approach—lightweight, playable, and nostalgic—but limited in raw tone and finish compared to contemporary models. Whether you're eyeing one as a beginner axe project or as a quirky vintage piece, they offer a fascinating peek into the budget instrument scene of the '80s.
