Aranjuez classical guitars, crafted in Japan, are esteemed for their exceptional craftsmanship, tonal richness, and affordability. Originating in the early 1970s, these instruments were initially designed to provide high-quality options for Japanese guitar enthusiasts who sought alternatives to the more expensive offerings from elite luthiers like Masaru Kohno
Craftsmanship & Heritage
The Aranjuez line was established under the guidance of Masaru Kohno, one of Japan's most revered luthiers. Early models were produced in collaboration with the Takamine workshop, ensuring meticulous construction standards. Notably, the top-tier models featured soundboards crafted by Kohno himself or his associates, such as Masaki Sakurai. These high-end instruments were often assembled and finished in Kohno's workshop, effectively offering Kohno-quality guitars at a more accessible price point.
In the 1980s, production shifted to the Ryoji Matsuoka workshop, maintaining the brand's commitment to quality. Today, Aranjuez guitars are once again produced by Takamine, continuing their legacy of excellence.
Tonal Characteristics
Aranjuez guitars are celebrated for their warm, resonant tones and balanced projection. For instance, the Aranjuez No.6 from 1978, featuring a solid cedar top and rosewood back and sides, is praised for its deep basses and ringing trebles. Similarly, the No.706 model offers a rich, expressive sound, making it suitable for both students and seasoned performers.
Playability & Build Quality
These guitars are known for their comfortable playability and solid construction. The No.706, for example, boasts a 650mm scale length and a 52mm nut width, with action measurements of 3mm on the 6th string and 2.5mm on the 1st string at the 12th fret, facilitating ease of play. The use of quality materials and attention to detail ensure that Aranjuez guitars not only sound excellent but also stand the test of time.
The Aranjuez line has garnered positive feedback from the guitar community. Enthusiasts appreciate the brand's ability to deliver instruments that rival higher-priced counterparts in terms of tone and craftsmanship. The combination of Kohno's design philosophy and the skilled workmanship of Japanese luthiers has solidified Aranjuez's reputation as a producer of high-quality classical guitars
Aranjuez classical guitars represent a harmonious blend of tradition, quality, and value. Whether you're a student seeking a reliable instrument or a professional desiring a guitar with rich tonal qualities, Aranjuez offers models that cater to a range of needs without compromising on craftsmanship. Their enduring legacy in the classical guitar world underscores their status as a wise choice for discerning musicians.
