This second hand pedal is in great condition
The Boss BF‑3 is a modern, versatile flanger that covers everything from subtle movement to full‑on jet‑engine sweep. It’s cleaner, more flexible, and more hi‑fi than the older BF‑2, with multiple modes that let you dial in classic analog‑style swirl, metallic digital textures, or deep stereo modulation. If you want a flanger that can do subtle, extreme, and everything in between, the BF‑3 is one of the most capable options in its price range
Key features:
- Four modes: Standard, Ultra, Gate/Pan, Momentary
- Separate inputs for guitar and bass
- Stereo outputs
- Rate, Depth, Resonance, Manual controls
- Buffered bypass
- Classic Boss durability
Tone & Sound
Overall Character
- Clean, modern, and versatile
- Capable of subtle shimmer or dramatic swoosh
- Less gritty than the BF‑2, more polished
- Excellent clarity even at extreme settings
- Works well with both clean and distorted tones
Mode Breakdown
1. Standard Mode
The most classic flanger sound.
- Smooth, musical sweep
- Great for 80s rock, new wave, and ambient textures
- Similar to a BF‑2 but cleaner and more controlled
2. Ultra Mode
The “go big” setting.
- Huge, dramatic sweep
- Deep resonance
- Jet‑engine territory
- Perfect for shoegaze, experimental, or dramatic transitions
3. Gate/Pan Mode
A unique, rhythmic modulation.
- Gate mode: choppy, percussive flanging
- Pan mode (stereo): sweeping left‑right movement
This mode shines in stereo rigs or for players who want something more unusual.
4. Momentary Mode
Engages the effect only while the footswitch is held down.
- Great for accents
- Perfect for live stabs, transitions, and dramatic moments
Controls & Usability
Manual
Sets the centre frequency of the sweep.
Lower = deeper, darker
Higher = brighter, more metallic
Resonance
Controls the intensity of the feedback.
- Low = smooth
- High = sharp, metallic, dramatic
Depth
Controls how wide the sweep is.
Rate
Controls speed, from slow whoosh to fast vibrato‑like modulation.
The BF‑3 has a huge range, and small adjustments can make big differences.
Build & Design
- Classic Boss tank‑like enclosure
- Reliable footswitch
- Stereo outs for wide modulation
- Separate bass input with tailored EQ
- Standard Boss 9V power
- Quiet operation for a flanger
Real‑World Use
1. Classic Rock & 80s Metal
Standard mode gives you that lush, sweeping modulation perfect for:
- Van Halen‑style textures
- 80s clean tones
- Big chorus‑like movement
2. Ambient
Ultra mode + slow rate = huge, immersive soundscapes.
3. Funk & Pop
Subtle flanging adds movement without overwhelming the mix.
4. Bass Guitar
The dedicated bass input keeps low end intact.
Great for:
- Funk bass
- Synth‑like textures
- Modern rock bass modulation
5. Live Performance Accents
Momentary mode is brilliant for dramatic sweeps or transitions.
The Boss BF‑3 is a modern, versatile, and powerful flanger that can handle subtle movement, classic sweep, and extreme modulation with ease. It’s cleaner and more flexible than the BF‑2, with useful performance features and stereo capability.
If you want a flanger that:
- Does classic and modern tones
- Works for guitar and bass
- Offers stereo and momentary operation
- Can go from subtle to extreme
…the BF‑3 is one of the best options in its class.
