Description

This second hand guitar effect pedal is in great condition

At its core, the Bad Monkey is a 2004 budget overdrive pedal designed as Digitech’s alternative to the Tube Screamer. Guitar Interactive notes that it was originally a low‑cost stompbox that suddenly gained legendary status after Josh Scott compared it directly to a Klon Centaur — and the tones were “exactly like a full‑fat, original KLON” in that shootout .

That single comparison changed everything.

 Strengths

1. Shockingly Good Tone for the Price

The JHS shootout demonstrated that the Bad Monkey can sound strikingly similar to high‑end overdrives like the Klon, TS9/TS808, Full‑Drive 2, Zendrive, and more. InSync highlights that it held its own against all of them, often sounding “oddly similar — if not identical” to pedals costing 10–20× more .

2. More Flexible EQ Than a Tube Screamer

Unlike a TS9, the Bad Monkey includes separate Low and High knobs, giving you more control over shaping the midrange hump. Audiofanzine users consistently praise this, noting that it offers “more frequency range” than a typical TS9 while keeping the same simplicity and charm .

3. Built Like a Tank

Digitech’s enclosures are famously rugged. Reviewers describe the chassis as solid, reliable, and gig‑worthy,  very much in line with Digitech’s reputation for durable, no‑nonsense pedals.

4. Cab‑Sim Output

A surprisingly useful feature: the second output includes a basic cab simulation. Audiofanzine users mention this as a secret trick that makes the pedal handy for direct recording or emergency DI situations .

The Digitech Bad Monkey is ideal for:

  • Players who want Tube Screamer flavour with more EQ control
  • Guitarists looking for a Klon‑like boost on a budget
  • Collectors who enjoy cult‑classic gear
  • Anyone who wants a rugged, reliable overdrive

The Bad Monkey is a perfect example of a sleeper pedal that turned into a legend overnight. The hype may be wild, but the core truth remains: it’s a genuinely great‑sounding overdrive, flexible, musical, and far better than its original price ever suggested.
