The DOD FX30-B Gate/Loop is a versatile vintage pedal that combines a noise gate with an effects loop, offering unique routing options and solid performance for its era.
If you're into shaping your signal chain with precision and keeping unwanted noise at bay, the FX30-B is a clever tool worth exploring. Released between 1985 and 1994, this pedal is part of DOD’s classic FX series and remains a cult favorite among players who appreciate analog simplicity and flexible utility.
Features & Controls
- Dual Functionality: It operates as both a noise gate and an effects loop controller. You can use it to clean up your signal or to trigger effects only when the gate opens.
- Three Knobs:
- Release: Controls how quickly the gate closes after the signal drops below threshold.
- Gate: Adjusts the gate’s strength—how aggressively it clamps down.
- Sensitivity: Determines the threshold level for the gate to open or close. Interestingly, some users note this knob behaves in reverse, with minimum sensitivity at full-right.
- Connectivity: Standard ¼" jacks for input/output and loop send/return make it easy to integrate into most pedalboards.
Performance
- Noise Suppression: The gate is effective at eliminating hum and hiss, especially useful with high-gain setups or vintage gear prone to noise.
- Loop Functionality: You can use it as a keyed gate—triggering effects only when a signal is present—or as an A/B switch. This opens up creative routing possibilities, like isolating delay or reverb trails from dry signal.
- Analog Simplicity: No menus, patches, or programming—just dial in by ear. Many users appreciate this tactile, intuitive approach.
Build & Reliability
- Durability: Built like a tank, typical of DOD’s 80s/90s pedals. Users report long-term reliability even with heavy use.
- Power: Runs on a 9V battery or DOD’s PS-3 adapter (1/8" plug), which may require a converter for modern pedalboards.
Pros
- Flexible routing options for creative signal control
- Effective noise gating without tone coloration
- Solid build quality and intuitive controls
The FX30-B is a niche but powerful utility pedal. If you're building a vintage rig or want a straightforward way to manage noise and signal flow, it’s a smart addition. It’s especially appealing to DIY modders and players who enjoy experimenting with pedalboard architecture.
