Description
Description
This second hand pedal is in great condition
The DOD YJM308 is a sharp, vintage‑voiced preamp/overdrive that delivers the bright bite, tight attack, and aggressive mid‑leaning punch associated with early Yngwie tones. It’s not a modern overdrive, this is a raw 1980s circuit that shines when pushing a loud amp rather than acting as a standalone dirt box.
What It Is
The YJM308 is essentially a reissue/reinterpretation of the original DOD 250, tweaked to suit Yngwie’s preferences:
- More treble bite
- More upper‑mid presence
- A slightly leaner low end
- A hotter output stage
It’s a simple two‑knob pedal, Level and Gain, but it’s surprisingly expressive depending on what you feed it into.
Tone & Sound
Voice & Character
- Bright, cutting, and articulate, especially with single coils.
- Adds a tight, percussive attack that works brilliantly for fast picking.
- The gain is grainy and vintage, not smooth or saturated like a Tube Screamer or modern boutique OD.
- Works best as a preamp boost rather than a primary distortion source.
Gain Range
- Low gain: adds clarity, bite, and a touch of grit.
- Mid gain: classic 80s hard‑rock crunch.
- High gain: gets fizzy unless the amp is already cooking.
Where It Excels
- Into a cranked Marshall‑style amp
- With single‑coil pickups, especially Strat‑style
- For neoclassical, hard rock, and classic metal tones
- As a tightening boost for already‑dirty amps
Controls & Usability
Level
The real star.
Crank it and it slams the front of your amp, adding volume, bite, and harmonic lift.
Gain
Useful up to about 1–2 o’clock. Beyond that it can get noisy and fizzy, but that’s part of the vintage charm.
Noise Floor
Higher than modern pedals.
It’s a 1970s‑style circuit, no noise reduction, no smoothing, just raw op‑amp behaviour.
Build & Design
- Classic DOD brick enclosure, rugged, heavy, and borderline indestructible.
- The YJM black-and-gold aesthetic looks great on a board.
- True bypass on later units, buffered on some early runs.
- The footswitch is famously stiff, but reliable.
Real‑World Use Cases
1. Boosting a Marshall
This is the pedal’s natural habitat.
It tightens the low end, adds upper‑mid cut, and gives you that Malmsteen pick attack.
2. Adding Presence to Dark Amps
If your amp is naturally warm or mid‑heavy, the YJM308 adds clarity without thinning the tone too much.
3. Strat Players
The pedal was practically built for single coils.
It enhances the natural snap and keeps the low end from getting muddy.
4. Recording
Great for stacking with other drives or using as a pre‑EQ boost before amp sims.
The DOD YJM308 is a character pedal, not a do‑everything overdrive.
If you want:
- a bright, aggressive preamp boost,
- classic DOD 250 DNA,
- and that unmistakable Malmsteen attack,
