Epiphone Dot (Cherry Red, 2010) Review
The 2010 Epiphone Dot in Cherry is a no-nonsense, workhorse semi-hollow guitar that pays faithful tribute to the legendary Gibson ES-335, but at a far more accessible price. It's a go-to model for guitarists who want vintage tone, timeless style, and solid build quality without emptying their wallets.
Build & Finish
True to the classic formula, the Epiphone Dot features a laminated maple top, back, and sides, paired with a solid mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard. The 2010 Cherry finish is beautifully rich and deep—aged just enough to add vintage appeal without looking overly worn.
Fit and finish are impressive for its price bracket. Binding on the top, back, and neck is clean, and the dot inlays (hence the name) give it a stripped-down, understated look that suits players who value tone and feel over flashy aesthetics. The hardware—tune-o-matic bridge, stopbar tailpiece, and Grover-style tuners—feels solid and dependable, even over a decade later.
Tone & Electronics
Plugged in, the Epiphone Dot delivers the kind of warm, rounded semi-hollow tone you'd expect from a 335-style guitar. Clean tones have clarity and warmth, while adding a bit of gain brings out a throaty, gritty edge perfect for vintage rock and soul.
The guitar's semi-hollow construction offers that characteristic resonance and airiness, without being overly prone to feedback at higher volumes. It's not quite as refined or complex as a Gibson, but for the price—and especially with a good amp—it sounds far better than it should.
Playability
The neck on the 2010 Dot is a comfortable '60s SlimTaper profile—slim but not too thin. The 24.75" scale length and medium-jumbo frets make it easy to bend notes and play comfortably across the fretboard. The action is generally low and smooth, and with a proper setup, this guitar can rival instruments far above its price range.
Its semi-hollow body is also surprisingly comfortable, balancing well whether seated or standing.
-
Classic semi-hollow tone with warm mids and airy highs
-
Gorgeous cherry red finish with vintage appeal
-
Solid construction and dependable hardware
-
Comfortable SlimTaper neck profile
-
Excellent value, especially for blues, jazz, and rock styles
The 2010 Epiphone Dot in Cherry is a well-crafted, great-sounding guitar that captures the spirit of the ES-335 at a fraction of the cost. Whether you’re a student stepping into the world of semi-hollows or a seasoned player looking for a reliable backup or mod platform, the Dot delivers charm, tone, and playability in spades. A true classic in the Epiphone lineup.
