Description

This second hand bass guitar is in good condition,

Some scuffs on the back of the body and a chip on the headstock.

A semi‑hollow, low‑end bass with personality, punch, and surprising versatility

The Jack Casady Bass is one of Epiphone’s most characterful instruments: warm, woody, articulate, and capable of huge low‑end presence thanks to its unique JCB‑1 low‑impedance pickup and VariGain transformer. It’s not a “do‑everything” bass, but what it does do, it does with authority.

Build & Construction

  • Body: Maple semi‑hollow with a centre block
  • Neck: Mahogany, set‑neck
  • Fingerboard: Rosewood
  • Scale: 34" (rare for a semi‑hollow)
  • Finish: Gloss Ebony – looks classy, slightly menacing, and very stage‑ready

The build quality is consistently strong on these models. The semi‑hollow construction gives it a natural resonance you feel through your chest when unplugged. It’s lighter than a Les Paul‑style bass but not featherweight; the centre block keeps it stable and reduces feedback.

Balance:
It sits well on a strap, though the large body means it feels more like a vintage ES‑style instrument than a modern compact bass. Left‑handed players (your perspective) would find the ergonomics surprisingly friendly,no awkward horn placement or neck dive issues.

 Electronics & Tone

This is where the Casady Bass becomes its own beast.

JCB‑1 Low‑Impedance Humbucker

Designed with Jack Casady himself, this pickup is not your typical humbucker. It’s cleaner, more hi‑fi, and more dynamic. It reacts to your playing like an acoustic instrument plugged into a studio preamp.

VariGain Transformer (3‑way impedance switch)

  • 50 ohm: Clean, open, acoustic‑like; great for expressive fingerstyle
  • 250 ohm: Balanced, punchy, the “default” setting for most players
  • 500 ohm: Hotter, thicker, more aggressive mids and output

This switch is the heart of the instrument. It’s not a gimmick, it genuinely changes the character and headroom of the bass.

Tone Character

  • Warm, woody lows with natural bloom
  • Clear, articulate mids that sit beautifully in a mix
  • Smooth, rounded highs without clank or harshness
  • Responds extremely well to dynamics—dig in and it growls; play softly and it breathes

It’s not a modern active bass. It’s more vintage, expressive, and organic. Think Motown meets early Zeppelin meets modern indie.

Playability

The neck is comfortable, slim enough for fast lines but with enough shoulder to feel substantial. The 34" scale gives it a tighter low end than most semi‑hollows, which often use 30" or 32".

Fretwork: Generally good, with smooth edges and a medium‑jumbo feel.
Action: Works best with medium action to let the semi‑hollow resonance breathe.
Strings: Flats sound phenomenal on this bass; rounds give it more bite but still keep that woody core.

 Hardware

  • Bridge: Three‑point adjustable (stable, but some players upgrade to Hipshot for finer control)
  • Tuners: Vintage‑style, solid, hold tuning well
  • Nut: Synthetic bone, cut decently from the factory

The hardware is functional and reliable. The bridge is the only divisive part—some love it, some replace it.

 Real‑World Use

Studio

This bass shines in recording environments. Engineers love it because it fills space without muddying the mix. The low‑impedance pickup gives it a clarity that sits beautifully under guitars.

Live

It has presence. The semi‑hollow body gives it a natural air that works well in blues, soul, classic rock, indie, and folk‑rock settings.
Feedback is rarely an issue thanks to the centre block.

Genres it excels at

  • Classic rock
  • Soul / Motown
  • Blues
  • Indie / alternative
  • Folk rock
  • Jazz‑adjacent warm tones

 Strengths

  • Unique tone you can’t get from any other Epiphone or Gibson bass
  • VariGain switch gives three genuinely different voices
  • Warm, expressive, semi‑hollow character
  • Great for recording
  • Beautiful Ebony finish with vintage vibe
  • Comfortable neck and good balance

The Epiphone Jack Casady Bass in Ebony is a musician’s instrument, full of personality, nuance, and vintage‑inspired charm. It rewards expressive playing and thrives in musical contexts where warmth, depth, and character matter more than surgical precision.

If you want a bass that feels alive, records beautifully, and stands out visually and sonically, this one delivers in a big way.
