The JGS-78 is a particularly interesting Japanese Fender, combining the familiar Jaguar shape with a more modern HH setup. 

The Fender JGS-78 Jaguar from 2002 is a great example of why Japanese-made Fenders from this era have developed such a strong following. Rather than simply recreating the classic Jaguar formula, Fender Japan took the familiar offset design and gave it a distinctly more modern character.

Finished in the wonderfully named Gunmetal Red Burst, with its matching headstock and black pickguard, this is a Jaguar that looks considerably more aggressive than the traditional vintage-style models. Underneath the striking finish is an alder body, maple neck and rosewood fingerboard.

A Jaguar With a Difference

The classic Jaguar is known for its 1960s styling, short scale and complex switching system, but the JGS-78 takes a different approach. This is a Jaguar designed with players who want a more direct, powerful instrument in mind.

The Gunmetal Red Burst finish is one of its biggest attractions. Combined with the matching headstock, it gives the guitar a distinctive appearance that manages to be both sophisticated and aggressive.

It is unmistakably a Jaguar, but this is not a traditionalist's Jaguar.

Japanese Craftsmanship

The Sound

Plugged into a good valve amplifier, the JGS-78 has a sound that is quite different from a traditional Jaguar.

There is plenty of body and sustain, with the humbuckers giving the guitar a confident, muscular character. Chords sound thick and substantial, while single-note lines have plenty of presence.

The shorter scale contributes to a slightly softer and more relaxed playing feel, while the alder body keeps the overall tone balanced.

It is particularly at home with rock, alternative, indie and heavier blues, although the humbuckers can also produce surprisingly clean tones when the guitar's volume is rolled back.

Stop Tailpiece and Tune-O-Matic Bridge

Another significant change from the traditional Jaguar design is the bridge arrangement. The JGS-78 uses a Tune-O-Matic-style bridge and stop tailpiece rather than the floating bridge and tremolo arrangement found on classic Jaguars. 

This gives the guitar a much more straightforward feel. There is excellent stability and the design is particularly well suited to players who don't need a vibrato system.

It also reinforces the JGS-78's identity as a more modern, performance-oriented take on the Jaguar.

A Rare and Collectable Japanese Fender

The JGS-78 was produced around 2002. Today, guitars like this are particularly appealing because they sit outside the usual Fender catalogue. They have the familiar Fender name and Japanese build quality, but offer a specification that you are unlikely to find on a conventional American vintage-style Jaguar.

The matching headstock and unusual finish make them even more distinctive.
