Description
Description
This second hand electric guitar is in great condition
A stripped‑back, modern metal workhorse with a fast neck, tight low‑end response, and a surprisingly solid mahogany body at this price.
Build, Feel & Playability
Neck & Fretwork
- Wizard III profile: slim, quick, and comfortable for long sessions.
- Satin finish keeps it fast and avoids the “sticky gloss” issue.
- Fretwork is consistently good for this price bracket — smooth edges, no sharp ends.
- Upper‑fret access is classic RG: effortless thanks to the deep cutaways.
Body & Finish
- Mahogany body gives it more midrange weight than the usual basswood RGs.
- Black Flat finish looks stealthy and industrial, though it does show fingerprints.
- White binding adds just enough contrast to avoid looking cheap.
Hardware
- Fixed bridge = stability, simplicity, and perfect for down‑tuning.
- Tuners are functional but basic; locking tuners would be a worthwhile upgrade.
- No trem means fewer headaches and more time actually playing.
Tone & Electronics
Quantum Pickups
These are better than their reputation suggests — especially for metal rhythm.
Bridge:
- Tight low end, fast transient response.
- Slight compression helps palm‑muted riffs stay controlled.
- Highs are present without being ice‑pick sharp.
Neck:
- Smooth enough for leads, but not lush.
- Cleans are serviceable rather than inspiring.
Overall character:
- Modern, articulate, and mix‑friendly.
- Great for metal, hard rock, and tight riffing.
- If you want versatility, a pickup swap transforms the guitar into something far more premium.
Real‑World Use
Recording
- Tight low end sits well in a dense mix.
- Neck pickup may need EQ help for clean passages.
Gigging
- Lightweight enough for long sets.
- Finish hides wear well.
- Fixed bridge keeps tuning rock‑solid even with aggressive playing.
Home Practice
- Comfortable neck encourages longer sessions.
- Predictable, stable tuning makes it low‑maintenance.
Who It Suits
- Metal and hard‑rock players
- Rhythm‑focused players who want clarity and tightness
- Anyone who prefers fixed bridge over trem
- Modders looking for a solid base
- Players who want a reliable, no‑nonsense workhorse
The Ibanez RG421EX‑BKF is a killer value guitar that punches above its price. It’s built for speed, stability, and modern tones, and while the pickups aren’t the most versatile, the core platform is strong enough to justify upgrading over time. For a sub‑£300 fixed‑bridge metal machine, it’s one of the best options in the UK market.
