MXR M101 Phase 90

The MXR Phase 90 is one of the most iconic guitar effects pedals ever produced, renowned for its distinctive swirling sound, simple controls and unmistakable orange finish. A long-standing favourite among guitarists, it delivers a classic phasing effect that adds movement, warmth and depth to your tone. From subtle modulation that enriches clean chords to bold, sweeping effects for solos and riffs, the Phase 90 is a versatile addition to almost any guitar setup.

At the heart of the Phase 90 is its four-stage phaser circuit, which creates a smooth, sweeping effect by shifting the phase of the guitar signal. The result is a rich, organic sound that works particularly well with electric guitar, adding a sense of motion without completely overwhelming the original tone. It is equally effective with clean sounds and overdriven tones, making it suitable for a wide range of musical styles, including classic rock, blues, alternative and psychedelic music.

One of the pedal's biggest strengths is its simplicity. Featuring a single Speed control, the Phase 90 allows you to adjust the rate of the phasing effect quickly and easily. Lower settings produce a slow, gentle swirl that adds subtle texture to chords and rhythm parts, while higher settings create a more pronounced, rapid modulation that cuts through during lead passages. This straightforward design makes it easy to achieve great sounds without spending time navigating complicated controls.

The MXR Phase 90 has earned its reputation through decades of use by influential guitarists, including Eddie Van Halen, whose distinctive lead tones helped establish the pedal as a classic of rock guitar. Its ability to add character to a guitar signal without requiring extensive adjustments has made it a popular choice for both professional musicians and players building their first pedalboard. The rugged metal enclosure is designed for regular use, while its compact footprint makes it easy to integrate into a wide range of effects setups.

Combining classic analogue phasing, straightforward operation and a durable design, the MXR Phase 90 remains an excellent choice for guitarists looking for a timeless modulation effect. Whether you want to add a subtle shimmer to your rhythm playing or create a bold, swirling lead sound, this legendary pedal offers an effective way to bring extra movement and personality to your tone.
