Description
Description
The Ozark 2223 is an all-solid wood flat-back octave mandola tuned an octave below a standard mandolin (typically G-D-A-E) in four double courses. It uses traditional materials and a classic teardrop body shape, making it suitable for folk, Celtic, string bands, and acoustic ensembles.
Key specs
Solid spruce top (bright, responsive tone)
Solid maple back and sides (middle frequency warmth and stability)
Maple neck with a slotted headstock and geared tuners
26-fret fingerboard, ~520 mm scale length
Tuned in double courses (G-D-A-E), similar to octave mandolin usage
π Pros
πΌ Warm, rich lower register β Its octave tuning gives a fuller, deeper tonal range than ordinary mandolins, adding body and texture to folk or acoustic arrangements. The solid spruce and maple woods help produce a balanced voice with clear upper harmonics and a satisfying sustain.
πΈ Solid wood build quality β All-solid construction usually translates to better resonance and tonal complexity than laminate instruments in the same price bracket β the sound often improves after playing-in.
π€ Good for ensemble roles β Because of its tuning and voice, it sits nicely alongside fiddles, guitars, and mandolins, filling a sonic space between mandolin and guitar.
π Comfortable playability β The moderate scale (~520 mm) and double courses keep string tension manageable, making chords and single-note passages less fatiguing.
β¬οΈ Customer impressions are generally positive β In bundled packs (e.g., with a tuner, chord book, gig bag), reviewers often praise the instrumentβs good build quality and enjoyable tone for the price.
π Cons
π Projection is modest β Flat-back instruments typically project less than carved-top or higher-end octave instruments, so in unamplified, large acoustic environments they can feel quieter or less punchy.
