Description
Description
This second hand bass guitar is in very good condition.
Some dents to the body, Otherwise great.
The 1996 Squier Affinity Precision Bass sits in an interesting place in Squier history: early Affinity models were lighter, rawer, and more aggressive than the later 2000s versions, with a tone that’s surprisingly usable and a feel that’s unmistakably “90s budget Fender”.
Build & Construction
These early Affinity basses typically featured:
- Body: Thin, lightweight body (often alder or poplar depending on batch)
- Neck: Maple with a satin finish
- Fingerboard: Rosewood
- Scale: 34"
- Frets: Medium, with decent dressing for the era
- Hardware: Basic but functional Squier open‑gear tuners
- Bridge: Simple 4‑saddle stamped steel unit
The body is noticeably thinner than a standard Fender P, which makes it comfortable and lightweight, but also slightly reduces low‑end mass.
Tone & Electronics
This era used a ceramic P‑bass pickup, which gives the bass a tone that is:
- Punchy and mid‑forward
- Slightly aggressive in the upper mids
- Tighter low‑end than a full‑fat Fender
- Bright top‑end that cuts through a mix
Playability
The necks on these mid‑90s Affinities tend to be:
- Slimmer than a traditional P‑bass
- Fast and comfortable, especially for smaller hands
- Stable, thanks to decent maple quality for the price
The lightweight body makes long sessions easy, though the thinner body can cause a bit of neck‑dive depending on strap choice..
Aesthetics
1996 Affinity P‑basses have a very “90s Fender budget” look:
- Slightly thinner body silhouette
- Classic P‑bass pickguard
- Simple finishes (Black, White, Sunburst, Torino Red)
- No‑nonsense, workhorse vibe
Real‑World Use
Where this bass shines:
- Recording: the ceramic pickup cuts through a mix
- Live: lightweight and comfortable
- Modding: perfect platform for upgrades
- Beginners: easy to play, forgiving neck
- Collectors: early Affinity models are becoming cult favourites
Strengths
- Lightweight and comfortable
- Slim, fast neck
- Punchy, aggressive P‑bass tone
- Surprisingly solid build for the era
- Great modding platform
- Rosewood fingerboard
A 1996 Squier Affinity Precision Bass is a sleeper gem: not refined, not vintage‑accurate, but full of character and surprisingly capable.
