a small dent on the front, and clouding of the finish on the back.
A passive pickup has been installed
The Tanglewood TW28ST‑R is one of those acoustics that quietly delivers far more than its price tag suggests. It sits in Tanglewood’s Roadster‑influenced family of dreadnoughts, offering a classic look, a bold voice, and a player‑friendly feel that suits beginners, intermediates, and even seasoned players who want a reliable workhorse guitar.
Build & Construction
Body & Materials
- Dreadnought body for maximum projection and low‑end power.
- Spruce top (the ST in the name) gives it a bright, responsive attack.
- Mahogany back and sides add warmth and midrange depth.
- The R indicates a rosewood fingerboard, which contributes to a smooth, balanced feel under the fingers.
The overall build quality is solid and dependable , very much in line with Tanglewood’s reputation for punching above their weight.
Finish & Aesthetics
- Natural satin finish that feels organic and open.
- Clean binding and understated styling give it a traditional, no‑nonsense look.
- It’s the kind of guitar that looks right at home in any setting, from living room to open mic.
Playability
Neck Feel
- Comfortable C‑profile neck that suits most hand sizes.
- Not too chunky, not too slim , a good middle ground.
- Satin finish on the neck keeps it fast and smooth.
Action & Setup
- Out of the box, Tanglewood acoustics are usually well‑set, but the TW28ST‑R responds beautifully to a personalised setup.
- The dreadnought shape gives plenty of headroom for strumming, but it’s also surprisingly friendly for fingerstyle.
Fretwork
- Clean fret ends and consistent leveling.
- No sharp edges or buzzing issues when properly set up.
Tone & Projection
Sound Character
- Bold low end thanks to the dreadnought body.
- Clear, bright top end from the spruce top.
- Warm, woody mids from the mahogany body.
This combination gives the TW28ST‑R a balanced but powerful voice that works across genres.
Strumming
- Big, full chords with strong projection.
- Great for singer‑songwriters, folk, country, and rock rhythm playing.
Fingerpicking
- Surprisingly articulate for a dreadnought.
- Notes separate well without getting muddy.
Flatpicking
- Punchy and responsive.
- Good dynamic range , it reacts well to both soft and aggressive playing.
Strengths
- Excellent value for money
- Strong projection and full dreadnought tone
- Comfortable neck and smooth playability
- Versatile across playing styles
- Clean, traditional aesthetic
The TW28ST‑R is ideal for:
- Beginners wanting a quality first guitar that won’t hold them back
