The Yamaha P-80 is a well-regarded digital stage piano that combines realistic piano feel, expressive sound and a slim, portable design. Originally introduced in 1999, it was designed for pianists who wanted the playing experience of a traditional acoustic piano in an instrument suitable for home use, rehearsals, studio work and live performance. Despite its age, the P-80 remains an appealing choice for players who value a quality weighted keyboard and straightforward, practical features.

One of the P-80's key strengths is its 88-key Graded Hammer Effect keyboard. This weighted action is designed to recreate the feel of an acoustic piano, with a heavier response in the lower register and a lighter touch towards the higher notes. Adjustable touch sensitivity allows players to tailor the keyboard's response to their playing style, making it suitable for everything from gentle, expressive passages to more dynamic performances. The full-sized keyboard also provides the range and feel expected by pianists who want to practise or perform traditional piano repertoire.

The P-80 uses Yamaha's AWM sound generation and Dynamic Stereo Sampling technology to produce its piano voices. Its selection includes Grand Piano, Classical Piano, Jazz Piano and Rock Piano sounds, alongside electric pianos, harpsichord, strings and several organ voices. This gives the instrument enough variety to cover classical playing, jazz, pop, rock and a range of accompanying duties. Adjustable reverb and additional effects, including chorus, symphonic, tremolo and delay, provide further options for shaping the sound to suit different musical styles.

Although the P-80 is primarily focused on piano performance rather than extensive synthesiser programming, it offers several useful features for practice and creativity. Dual mode allows two sounds to be layered together, while Split mode assigns different sounds to separate sections of the keyboard. A built-in metronome helps with timing and practice, and the two-track recorder allows performances to be captured and played back. MIDI connectivity also makes the P-80 useful in a home studio, allowing it to communicate with compatible music equipment and recording software through suitable interfaces.

Its slim body and relatively lightweight construction make the P-80 practical for a full-sized weighted digital piano. Weighing approximately 16.8kg, it is portable enough for transport between rehearsals and performances while still providing a substantial playing surface. The instrument includes headphone connections for quiet practice, along with stereo audio outputs for connecting to external amplification, a PA system or recording equipment. Please note that the P-80 does not have built-in speakers, so headphones or an external sound system are required to hear its sound.

Combining a realistic weighted keyboard, expressive piano sounds and useful performance features, the Yamaha P-80 remains a capable digital stage piano for players who prioritise playing feel and sound over modern extras. Whether used for practice, live performance or studio work, it offers a straightforward and dependable approach to digital piano playing, with the added flexibility of multiple voices, onboard effects and MIDI connectivity.
